With one brother and three sisters, Clarksville High School graduate Laine Hamman knew paying for college would mean either large loans or working her way through, or maybe both. Participating in extracurricular activities, like running track, might not be an option.

But Hamman was the fortunate recipient of a generous Paul W. Ogle Scholarship, which gave her $5,000 per year towards her college education. Hamman attended the University of Louisville, where she received a bachelor’s degree in sports administration with a minor in marketing in 2004. She graduated with a much smaller loan than anticipated, and only worked 10 to 15 hours per week while attending school. She also had the time to run track and cross-country year-round. That, she says, was important for staying in shape, as well as the other skills she picked up as part of an athletic team. “It was the experiences of participating on a Division I college sports team, the places we traveled and the camaraderie of the close friends I made that taught me the most,” Hamman says. “It also taught me how to balance multiple responsibilities.”

Hamman has taken her skills to the United States Tennis Association, Kentucky office, where she is director of marketing and promotions. She writes and assembles a monthly e-newsletter, keeps the Web site updated for the organization and helps various groups throughout the state promote their tennis-related activities. It has come full-circle for Hamman as she helps others discover the power of participating in athletics. “I couldn’t be more grateful for this scholarship,” Hamman says. “I was able to concentrate on learning and creating a future for myself, instead of constantly worrying about money. I really appreciate the foundation and their continuous efforts in helping others succeed.”
