Trees Fulfill a Need in Our Community

The Foundation’s Community Needs Assessment identified a wide range of areas that our community needs to address. One need that stood out was our region’s poor air quality. To make an impact in this area, the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana has made a grant from our Community Impact Fund to support and compliment the Jeffersonville Urban Enterprise Zone “Tree Walk” project. The Tree Walk project aims to plant nearly 110 new trees along a designated walking route east of Downtown. These trees will grow up to play an important role in our community. In addition to beautifying spaces, they will create more shade along heavily traveled streets, improve our air quality, and help with drainage.

The City is using the grant money from the Community Foundation to further increase the City’s tree canopy, by providing free trees to residents in the neighborhood around the Tree Walk. The free trees are required to be planted along the street so that they also grow up to provide shade along the streets and sidewalks leading into Downtown Jeffersonville. The City is distributing trees to property owners in an area bounded by Spring Street, 10th Street, French/Graham St. and the Ohio River.

A limited number of trees are available, one per property, on a first come, first serve basis and applications must be received by February 21, 2017. We hope you’ll take advantage of this great opportunity to create an impact in our community.
